There are 4 file types use the .LAY file extension:
1. DVD Studio Pro Layout File
File created by DVD Studio Pro, a program used to author DVDs; contains metadata internal to DVD Studio Pro and the DVD project; typically stored within the VIDEO_TS directory of a DVD project.
NOTE: DVD Studio Pro does not write LAY files to discs when burning them. If you burn the DVD project using another program, you should make sure to exclude the LAY files.

2. Tecplot Layout File
Diagram layout file created by Tecplot, a scientific computation and visualization program; saves the visual layout of a plot (.PLT file) in the workspace; contains instructions for how to display the plot as well as settings that define each frame's appearance.
LAY files also include page layout information and color spectrum properties.

3. MAME Layout File
Layout file used by MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), a program used to play emulated arcade games; contains layout settings that describe how to arrange different objects for a game.
Layout files are used for placing artwork graphics as well as the active game window within MAME.

4. Rhino 3D Layer State File
File created by Rhinocerous 3D, a program used for three-dimensional modeling; stores the state of a layer, which contains a grouping of 3D objects and their properties; used to save and load specific layer settings.
All objects within a layer can be modified together. For example, users can change the wireframe and color together, as well as turn on and off all objects within a layer.
