There are 2 file types use the .MXI file extension:
1. Adobe Extension Information File
File used by Adobe Extension Manager, a program used to organize Adobe Creative Suite application extensions; describes an .MXP extension package and includes the extension's name, version number, and type; also includes information about each file included with the extension.
MXI files provide information while browsing extensions in Extension Manager.

2. Maxwell Image
Image format created by Maxwell Render, a photorealistic graphics rendering application; contains high dynamic range (HDR) image data as well as extra render channels (depth buffer, shadow channel, etc.) and lighting adjustments for each emitter contribution; rendered from an .MXS 3D scene file or from another imported image format; used as the native output format for rendered images.
MXI files save lighting information, which includes the calculations for the light conditions in the scene. This allows users to fine tune or recompute light settings in future renderings. Additionally, Maxwell Render allows users to pause rendering and resume it at a later time, which is useful for generating partial previews.
NOTE: Maxwell images are used for generating photorealistic images in film, animation, architecture, interior design, and product design.
