There are 3 file types use the .NAM file extension:
1. Aqua3D Network File
Data file used by Aqua3D, a program used for simulating underwater acoustic networks; saves data that initializes the network environment; includes the simulation space dimensions, node positions, signal transmission events; displays as a 3D environment in the software.
NOTE: The file extension ".nam" comes from Network AniMator (NAM), the software package that Aqua3D was developed from.

2. G.E.C.K. Mod Data File
File used by GECK (the Garden of Eden Creation Kit), a program used for creating custom modifications ("mods") for the games Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas; can be included as part of a mod package and stores data that forces the mod package to load with the game.
NAM files are sometimes manually deleted so that GECK does not auto-load the corresponding mod package.

3. MODFLOW Name File
Data file used by MODFLOW, a program developed by USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) and used for modeling groundwater flows; saved in a plain text format and contains a list of MODFLOW data files and unit values; used as input to a MODFLOW water flow simulation.
