There are 3 file types use the .VMF file extension:
1. Valve Map File
Game level or map file created with the Valve Hammer Editor version 4 or later; used for creating custom levels for Half-Life, a first-person shooter game; stores level information in an XML-style format.
Previous versions of Valve Hammer Editor saved custom levels as .MAP files.

2. Covox Speech Thing Sample
8-bit audio sample format used by Covox Speech Thing (the Covox Plug) and Voice Master; worked with an external audio output device made by Covox in the late 1980s and a newer device called the Disney Sound Source in the early 1990s.

Audio format used for transferring audio over the Internet, such as Internet Phone applications; encoded using the Internet Wave encoder
