There are 2 file types use the .XFD file extension:
1. XFD File
File that uses the Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL) standard to represent a structured, legally-binding business form; contains business form data including layout, digital signatures, inline expressions, and business transaction details; addresses business transaction needs for auditability, non-repudiation, preservation of context, and security.
XFD files are the same as .XFDL files. They were designed to create standardized business forms and are used in government and business transactions.
NOTE: The United States Airforce discontinued the use of IBM PureEdge Viewer. You should use the Lotus Forms Viewer instead.

2. FormFlow 99 Form Data File
File created in the FormFlow 99 format, which was developed by JetForm; contains page form element information, such as the names and values of text fields; used for storing form data that can be imported into a PDF document.
XFD files are similar to .XFDF files, except XFDF files are more common and have a newer format that uses XML formatting.
NOTE: FormFlow 99 XFD files should not be confused with Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL) files, which also use the ".xfd" extension.
