There are 2 file types use the .XMZX file extension:
1. SofTest Exam File
An XMZX file is an exam file used by ExamSoft SofTest, an exam-taking application available for Windows and macOS. It contains an exam that a student or other exam taker can take in SofTest. XMZX files are transformed into .XMWX and .XMDX files as students take and complete exams.
ExamSoft is a digital assessment platform that schools, businesses, and other entities use to test students, employees, and those seeking certifications. To take an ExamSoft exam, exam takers must download and install ExamSoft SofTest, which is a Windows and macOS application, and then open an exam file. SofTest exam files are saved as XMZX files.
Typically, proctors send XMZX files to exam takers along with a password that lets them open and start taking the exam. After an exam taker starts an exam, the exam's XMZX file is automatically deleted and replaced with an XMWX file, which contains a copy of the in-progress exam. When an exam taker finishes an exam, their completed exam is converted to an XMDX file, which is automatically uploaded to ExamSoft's cloud servers.
You can open an XMZX file in ExamSoft SofTest (Windows, Mac). To do so:
- Open SofTest and click the button.
- In the Exam File dropdown list, find and select your XMZX file.
- Complete all required fields and then click to begin your exam.

2. ExamSoft Exam File
Exam file used by ExamSoft, an online assessment-management program; contains an exam downloaded from ExamSoft.
When you download an exam from ExamSoft an XMZX file is created to contain the exam content. You can then open it with SofTest, an ExamSoft application for Windows and OS X. When taking the exam the XMZX file is automatically deleted and replaced with the XMWX "working" file. When you complete the exam, the .XMWX file is replaced by the .XMDX file, which contains the final answers. This file is located in the Answers folder in the SofTest installation directory on your computer. You can then upload the XMDX file to the ExamSoft cloud.
ExamSoft allows you to control the entire testing process. It includes exam creation, delivery, scoring, administration, and analysis. It is commonly used in the K-12, undergrad, nursing, medical, pharmacy, law, and dental fields of study.
