2. Software Overview
Autodesk Maya is a powerful 3D modeling studio available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is used to create and animating 3D models for motion graphics, games, and most commonly, cinematic movies. There is a free 3-year educational license available for students and teachers.
Maya gives you many features for creating realistic models that interact accurately with their environments. You can add fur and hair to your models that react to physical forces down to per-hair collisions. You can also create realistic cloth, liquid, and particle effects.
Maya allows you to easily integrate 3D effects into video footage and compose different scenes for your movie. It is packaged with MatchMover that allows you to composite CGI elements into your video using advanced camera tracking. You can also use Camera Sequencer to layout multiple camera shots into your animation sequence. With Maya Embedded Language you can customize the program with plugin-ins and modifications and create scripts to simplify and automate tasks.
Autodesk Maya is a very powerful and complex tool that is difficult to master. If you want a 3D modeling tool that is comparable to Maya but doesn't have as much of a learning curve, Autodesk 3ds Max is another great option. If you are up to the challenge of Maya, you will find it to be a great 3D program with endless possibilities.
