2. Software Overview

BlueJ is a free IDE for the Java programming language. It is available for Windows, OS X, Linux, and any other platforms that run Java.

BlueJ provides and editor that features a variety of tools, such as unique scope highlighting and the ability to directly invoke Java code. The environment enables you to interact with objects and inspect their value, pass them as parameters, call methods on them, and more. Also, the application is extensible allowing you to add on to BlueJ's functionality.

The application is designed to be easier for beginners to use than say, the Eclipse and NetBeans professional environments. Also, because of its friendliness to beginners, it is a great teaching utility. If you are new to the Java development environment and don't want to be overwhelmed, give BlueJ a shot.
