2. Software Overview

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email, chat, and news feed application. It allows you to manage your email, chat with other users, and subscribe to news feeds and blogs.

Thunderbird allows you to manage multiple email accounts and create multiple identities within each account. The client supports POP3 and IMAP servers and partially supports the Microsoft Exchange Server. Thunderbird gives you tools, such as message filtering, quick search, and message grouping to help you organize your email. The program lets you set up chat accounts through Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Twitter, IRC, and XMPP chat networks. The application also provides the ability to subscribe to your favorite blogs or news feeds. Among the provided features, Thunderbird is also extensible. It supports add-ons that increase the functionality of the application, such as calendars and interface-altering themes.

In 2012, Mozilla decreased the support for Thunderbird, although it is open for development by users. Depending on the platform you use, there are better desktop email clients available. Windows Live Mail and Mac OS X Mail are better options than Thunderbird but if you are a Linux user, you may want to go with Mozilla Thunderbird.
