2. Software Overview
Rigs of Rods is an open source 3D game. It allows you to simulate the driving, flying, and sailing experiences of a variety of vehicles. The simulator is available as a binary download for Windows and source code download for OS X and Linux.
The game provides a variety of vehicles to choose from, including trucks, sports cars, planes, trains, and boats. In order to recreate the driving physics of each vehicle Rigs of Rods uses the mass-spring-damper model, blade element theory, and accuracy buoyancy model. Some other features of the game include support for scripting using Angel Script, a multiplayer game mode, and graphical effects generated by the OGRE3D engine.
Rigs of Rods offers a fun and free diversion for a couple of hours if you want to try driving different vehicles. It is no where near the quality of any professional simulators but it's open source, allowing you to customize the simulator. It also boasts an active user community that creates new vehicles and terrains. All in all, Rigs of Rods is worth your time to experiment with but not your choice for a professional simulator.
